Wholly secular in nature, the After-School Program exists to supplement the education received by Nativity students during the school day with an individualized, character-building tutoring program in the afternoon and evening. It is designed to develop our students academically, physically, and socially. The After-School Program begins at 3:30pm and operates as an intense program which runs for 1½ hours on Monday and Friday and for 3 hours on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The After-School Program serves 57 current Nativity students and 48 Nativity graduates.
Nativity provides a competitive, interscholastic organized sports program that includes the following: soccer, flag football and cross-country in the fall; basketball, martial arts and swimming in the winter; and baseball, volleyball and track in the spring. After-school activities include:
- Chess Club
- Young Engineers Club
- Ecology Club
- Young Authors’ Club
- Improvisational Comedy Club
- Cooking Club
- Mock Trial Club (facilitated by the District Attorney’s Office)
Nativity also conducts an on-going, comprehensive community service learning program. These projects have included clean-up of the neighborhood, singing for the elderly, creating “care baskets” for the homeless and volunteering at a number of social service agencies (Dismas House, Abby’s House, Friendly House and the Mustard Seed Soup Kitchen).
The most essential component of our After-School Program is evening study. Evening study runs three nights a week from 5:15pm to 6:30pm, following the completion of sports and activities. The program first assesses student progress and then uses these assessments to target a student’s academic deficiencies. Paired with undergraduates from College of the Holy Cross and working directly with Nativity staff, the students grapple with academic subjects that pose personal challenges. It is also a time to develop the skills for independent and silent study as such skills are critical for success in high school.
Evening study is also for our graduates. It is part and parcel of our mission to help students excel at academically-challenging, private high schools. If not attending a boarding school, our graduates are required to return to Nativity at least once a week. Graduates can receive tutoring as well as use our facility for quiet, independent study. By being a presence at evening study, our graduates become role models for our current students by sharing their excitement about the next stage of learning and development: high school.
