The Nativity Academic Day

Each Nativity student is encouraged to learn, to serve and to grow to the best of his academic ability by adhering to the school’s four pillars: vires (strength), studium (scholarship/study), mores (character) and christianitas (service to others). The curriculum of the school is specifically designed around the above philosophy of education. Operating on a traditional quarterly academic calendar – and running from 8:00am until 3:30pm - the core curriculum includes the following subjects:

Mathematics –

At Nativity, the goal of the mathematics program is to prepare students for high school courses required of colleges. To that end, mathematics courses at Nativity reinforce basic mathematical concepts and operations to strengthen each student’s foundation in math. Courses then introduce new concepts designed to prepare students for algebra as they enter high school.

Science –

Nativity recognizes that a student’s desire to pursue science in high school is directly traceable to his experience in middle school. Utilizing the Truth About Science curriculum, Nativity students literally get their hands dirty – or “do science” – while understanding the underlying scientific principles.

Social Studies –

Much of a Nativity education focuses on the broadening of social and academic horizons. The social studies curriculum is specifically designed to have students understand historical trends and to help them grasp that they are citizens of the world.

Language Arts –

The challenge of living in a multimedia age is to make reading important. The goal of Nativity’s language arts curriculum – Great Books – is to create life-long readers. While learning the basics of phonics and grammar, the students receive individual reading plans that help them get up to and then surpass grade level.

Spanish –

Through the Ven Conmigo curriculum, our students gain both proficiency in a second language and an understanding of the cultural fabric underlying the many Spanish-speaking populations.

The curriculum also includes religion classes, focusing on character-building and moral development as well as the building-blocks of the Judeo-Christian religious tradition. The students participate in a Renaissance period five days a week in order to incorporate the visual, dramatic and musical arts into their lives. Students also take a life-skills class that encourages proficiency in areas such as study skills, health, financial skills and high school preparation. With a 4:1 ratio of students to faculty, Nativity students make significant gains in the classroom because teachers are able to pull students out of classes and work intensively with them on problematic areas of study.
